Henlopen City Oyster House

We have frequented the HCOH over the last 15 years. Atmosphere and service is great and food is very good.
However, this last visit was a bit disappointing. Main complaint was the portion size for some of the dishes. The crispy scallops were tasty but at $22 and for only 5 or 6 average sized scallops that was overpriced. The plate was also deceiving in that 3 lemon slices were disguised as scallops, making the dish seem larger.
We've ordered the $100 king crab leg before to share, and it always was large enough to feed 3 people. This time is barely fed 2. It was also a bit on the salty side but otherwise tasty and at the right consistency.
In contrast the sides dishes were too large, again making the meal seem larger than it was.
So I knock off 1 star for what otherwise could be a 5 star meal.

We had an amazing experience at Henlopen City Oyster House! The potato soup (I think that’s what it was called) was incredibly delicious. We also tried the oyster tray, and hands down, these were the best oysters in town! While I don’t recall the other dishes, the photos I took say it all—everything looked and tasted fantastic. Definitely coming back!

To set expectations for this review, I’m sure everyone already knows Henlopen City Ouster House is great because they don’t take reservations and it was super busy even in off season…. but I’m going to tell you why I had a great time anyways!
1. Jackie my waitress was so sweet and kind to me for having gone to dinner alone! (Business travel) She did an absolutely phenomenal job checking on me, filling water throughout my meal and recommending items on the menu. Th recommendations were fire.
2. The oysters were incredible. I only got three as I wanted an entree but honestly it’s questionable if when I return tomorrow I will get more even with an entree. They all had great, mild flavor and were not grainy! I went for an ‘I want 3 different oysters surprise me approach’ and feel like this was the best choice for me. Solid selections by Jackie and they came quick and were a lovely starter.
3. The lobster roll was not only the best lobster roll I’ve had but also the best bang for my buck I’ve ever gotten! It was huge! I happily had to dig some of the meat out with a fork before diving into the roll with the bread. 10/10 experience. I’m 100% certain all the food is this good but I’m happy with my choice.
4. I didn’t even get to the broccoli so I got it boxed up to go but it smells really good.
5. Please see bullet #1 about wait staff. 100/10!
