The most dominant geological feature on the central Delmarva Peninsula, the Swamp is owned by a private non-profit conservation organization. Access is limited, but a drive through the area yields amazing views of the large bald cypress trees and provides a feeling of wild remoteness. Located on Route 54 west of Route 113 near Selbyville.

The "runway" is or was fields, and the oval is water with an island and partial island, apparently pretty deep, and I have no idea why a pond would have been dug out in that pattern. I was told the ditches and roads were a New Deal project to get people back to work during the Great Depression, part of the Civilian Conservation Corps. People used to ride horses in there, but the hunt club that leased it chased people out - this was decades ago...

Why is there what appears to be a runway within these woods with an unusual ovular structure next to it that DNREC has no related records to explain?
